Hobbies….Does wiping snotty noses count?

“What do you like to do in your spare time?” God I hate this question. Spare time, what spare time?! I usually mumble something about reading, and then quickly change the subject. The truthful answer is, I have absolutely no idea. I have never taken the time to find out, I always seem to put all my energy and focus on other people.

I’m a mum to 3 young children, so I spend my time changing nappies, wiping noses and singing Humpty Dumpty. Every now and again I may buy a book, that I will wishfully look at on my bookshelf, wondering if I will ever the time or energy to read it. If I’m really lucky, I will have time to watch half of a Harry Potter film before passing out in the evening.

It’s time to change this, not the looking after my children part, I will find what I enjoy. Im not quite sure where I will find the time, does the house really need to be cleaned, but I’m going to make sure I put at least an hour aside each day for myself.

After searching the internet and crossing off backpacking and mountain climbing, I have found 5 different hobbies I want to try. I’m going to spend a month on each one. They are as follows:

  1. Crochet– I have heard that this an easy and cheap hobby to try. I’ve ordered a beginners kit off Amazon for £17.99, and spent ages watching tutorials on YouTube. I’m hoping to make a blanket for my 1 year old, but I’m not the most creative person. I’m also very good at starting projects, and not finishing them so we will see how this goes.
  2. Photography– with how good smartphones are now, there is no need to invest in an expensive camera. It will also come in handy for capturing those special moments with the children.
  3. Online course– this is something I have been thinking about doing for a few years now. There are a lot of cheap/free courses out there, and I love the idea of learning new things. I may start with English to improve my grammar 😝
  4. Learn a new language– this one I’m not sure about, I was terrible at french at school. So why pick it you ask, well I read that it improves your memory and mine is terrible. There are also many other advantages to learning a new language, I just hope I’m better at Spanish then french.
  5. Baking– this one I’m looking forward to. I have always loved baking cakes, but have never really put any time into it. I like that I could get my children involved if I want to, and who doesn’t like cake, right? Seems like a win-win to me.

Hopefully these will keep me occupied for a while. Wish me luck.

If you have any ideas for any hobbies to try, please leave a comment and let me know.
